It all started in 1996, when merchants on Dahlonega’s historic Public Square spotted a baby bear in a sycamore tree on the town square. The young bear cub, lost and alone, wouldn’t come down from his perch. While traumatic for the bear, it was a wonderful excuse for the people of Dahlonega to throw a party.
Since Appalachian and bluegrass music are all much loved in the region, traditional music became the focus, and the Bear on the Square Mountain Festival was born.
From its humble beginnings, Dahlonega’s Bear on the Square Mountain Festival has grown into a highly entertaining and lively weekend of music and art held in and around the town’s Historic Public Square. Usually, held mid-April, just when the dogwoods begin to bloom, the festival now offers numerous events and activities celebrating the Southern Appalachian region’s music and art.
